Although both of these alloys are stainless steel and their contents are very similar, chromium has stainless steel luster and durability. There are some key differences in the percentage of chromium, nickel, and carbon in the alloy. Type 304 is a basic chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel that is generally inexpensive and suitable for a wide range of product and construction applications. As part of the 300 series, it consists essentially of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, sometimes referred to as 18-8 stainless steel. It is non-magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It is readily available in various forms. This type is easy to form and manufacture and has excellent corrosion resistance.
